Air sealing and thermal performance

Spray foam does two things at once: it insulates and air seals in a single pass. That's what makes it the right call for cathedral ceilings, garage conversions, ADU builds, roof deck applications, and any cavity where blown-in can't reach or hold position. Closed-cell runs R-6 to R-7 per inch, which matters a lot when you're working with a 2x4 rafter bay and need to hit a code target. It's also a Class II vapor retarder, which is why it's the standard choice for unvented attic and conditioned crawlspace assemblies. Open-cell is softer, less expensive, and vapor-open. It's a better fit for interior partitions where acoustics and breathability matter more than moisture control. We'll tell you which one fits the space during the estimate, not after the job is scoped.

Spray Foam Insulation FAQs

Is spray foam right for every project?
No. Spray foam is powerful and earns a premium in the right spot, but the right material depends on the space, budget, ventilation, and project goals. For a standard vented attic with decent access, blown-in is usually the better value.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell foam?
Open-cell is lighter, less expensive, softer, and lets a small amount of moisture pass. Closed-cell is denser, costs more, adds rigidity, and acts as both an air barrier and a Class II vapor retarder. We recommend whichever fits the assembly and the goal.
Can spray foam help with drafts?
Yes. Spray foam is often the answer when air sealing is the main comfort or efficiency problem. It expands and seals gaps that loose-fill insulation can't reach.
Is spray foam safe to be around once it's installed?
Yes. Once cured, spray foam is inert and doesn't off-gas. The cure time matters during the install itself, so we ventilate the space and confirm re-occupancy is safe before we leave.
Does spray foam need a thermal barrier?
In most living spaces, yes. California building code requires a thermal or ignition barrier over exposed spray foam in occupied areas. We explain the assembly during the estimate so the scope is clear.
